How Thunder Has Performed in October

How Thunder Has Performed in October
Fact Checked by Pat McLoone

The Oklahoma Thunder have missed the playoffs the last three seasons but jumped from 24 wins in 2021-22 to 40 in 2022-23. This year the Thunder are projected to add a few more wins under fourth-year head coach Mark Daigneault.

While the Thunder have been struggling recently, their play at the start of the season hasn’t helped. BetOklahoma.com – your source for Oklahoma sports betting – did research to see which teams have performed the best in October since 2017-18. The Thunder finished 27th out of 30 NBA teams, with an October record of 11-19. That equates to winning 37% of their October games, which is considerably worse than their overall 48% winning percentage during that those years.

BetCarolina.com utilized ChampsorChumps.us to find the October records. (Note that all teams didn’t participate in the same number of games, so ranking is based on win percentage.) No games were played in October during the 2020-21 NBA season. Here are the results:

Looking Back, Ahead at Thunder

In 2017-2018, the Thunder went 4-3 in October and finished 48-34 for the season, before losing in the first round of the playoffs to the Jazz. The following year the team got off to a 2-4 October start but finished 49-33, before losing in the first playoff round to the Trail Blazers. The following October was even worse, a 1-4 start, but the team rebounded to finish 44-28 in the COVID-shortened season before getting bounced by the Rockets in the first round. In the shortened 2020-21 season, games didn’t start until December, but no October games didn’t help the Thunder, who were terrible, finishing 22-50. In 21-22, a 1-5 October was a sign of things to come as OKC finished a sorry 24-58Last October also told the story as the team went 3-3 and then finished 40-42 for the season.

This October the Thunder kick off the season in Chicago on Oct. 25 then roll into Cleveland on Oct. 27. The home opener Oct. 29 is against the champion Denver Nuggets and the next day they get the Detroit Pistons. A split of the first four is likely, as is another season hovering around .500, but on the positive side. Take a look at our story on if the Thunder can exceed the oddsmaker’s preseason wins total.

Three players the Thunder will need to continue their upward trend are young star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, younger center Chet Holmgren, who will debut this year after missing all last season, and veteran Serbian guard Vasilije Micic, who also will make his NBA debut, but after starring for years overseas. If everyone meshes, OKC should be OK.
