Oklahoma Rates Among Most Improved College Football Offenses
Fact Checked by Thomas Leary

Defeating archrival Texas in the Red River Rivalry will always be a feather in the cap for any OU fan. And Oklahoma also had one of the most improved offenses in the nation as far as average points scored per game.

There is no legal, regulated Oklahoma sports betting, but fans can follow the latest developments on that front at BetOklahoma.com.

With one game left in the college football season, we have seen a bunch of teams improve their offense immensely from the 2022 to 2023 seasons, whether that can be attributed to a change at coordinator or improved talent. BetOklahoma.com used TeamRankings.com to find out the biggest improvement in average points scored per game by every Power 5 college football team. Here are the leaders:

Georgia Tech Most Improved Offense

The biggest mover on our list is Georgia Tech, which has shed its former triple-option identity and adopted a different approach under Brent Key in his first full season as head coach in Atlanta. If Oklahoma sportsbook apps were legal, Georgia Tech would have been a good under-the-radar team to ride. The Yellow Jackets went from averaging 15.5 points per game in 2022 to 29.7 ppg in 2023, an improvement worth two touchdowns per game. Tech only improved by one win in the regular season (from 5-7 last season to 6-6 this fall) but that was enough to qualify for a bowl game. And in the Gasparilla Bowl in Tampa on Dec. 22, Tech – still showing its ability to run the ball from previous seasons – gained 284 rushing yards and 371 total yards in a 30-17 victory over UCF.

Colorado, also under a first-year coach with Deion Sanders, had the second-best scoring improvement, from 15.4 ppg in 2022 to 28.2 this season, a jump of 12.8 points on average. Virginia Tech, Texas A&M and Miami (Florida) rounded out the top five, according to TeamRankings.com stats.

Where Oklahoma Offense Ranks On List

In ninth place on the list of the most improved scoring offenses in FBS is Oklahoma, with quarterback Dillon Gabriel and wide receivers Drake Stoops and Nic Anderson leading the way. The Sooners, in their second season under head coach Brent Venables, improved by 8.9 points per game, scoring 41.7 ppg in 2023 compared to 32.8 in 2022. That helps explain why the team’s record jumped from 6-7 last season to 10-3 this time around as the offense solidified even though Venables came from a defensive background (he was Clemson’s defensive coordinator for 10 years before returning to Norman, where he had previously been an assistant from 1999-2011).

Gabriel threw for 3,660 yards and 30 touchdowns this season, giving him 6,828 yards and 55 TDs in his two-season stint as a Sooner, but he has announced that he is transferring to Oregon for the 2024 season. After his announcement, former 5-star recruit Jackson Arnold stepped in for the Alamo Bowl as OU’s starting quarterback and had typical ups and downs against Arizona. The freshman was 26-of-45 for 361 yards and two touchdowns, but also threw three interceptions.
