How Oklahoma Big 12 Coaches Stack Up in October
Fact Checked by Michael Peters

In the swan song of Oklahoma’s tenure in the Big 12, the Sooners are looking to go out on top, while Oklahoma State hopes to get back on track.

So far, the Sooners have played their part well, ranked in the top 15 after winning at Cincinnati last Saturday to open conference play. Up the road in Stillwater, it’s been much bumpier, with the Cowboys following a 2-0 start with a blowout home loss to South Alabama and a Big 12-opening road loss at Iowa State.

With just one game remaining for OU and OSU before we move into October, BetOklahoma.com utilized records from Sports-Reference.com to see which Big 12 coaches have the best record in the month. Coaches must have a minimum three years’ experience to qualify.

There is no legal Oklahoma sports betting. It will be the 2024 legislative session before the topic is again debated.

Gundy Typically Thrives in October

Longtime Cowboys coach Mike Gundy is the only state coach that qualifies for our list, having been in Stillwater since 2005. During that tenure, Gundy’s posted a 46-21 (.687) record in October, ranking third among qualifying Big 12 coaches — behind K-State’s Chris Klieman (.811) and Matt Campbell of Iowa State (.707).

While OU second-year coach Brent Venables doesn’t qualify for our list, he did go 2-2 in October a year ago — falling to TCU (55-24) and Texas (49-0), before beating No. 19 Kansas (52-42) and Iowa State (27-13).

Both of Oklahoma’s Big 12 members will look to turn the corner in October, with OU slated to play No. 3 Texas in the Red River Shootout on Oct. 7, followed by a home game against UCF on Oct. 21 and a road clash with Kansas on Oct. 28. The Cowboys’ October slate includes three home games — against Kansas State (Oct. 6), Kansas (Oct. 14) and Cincinnati (Oct. 28) — offset by a road game with West Virginia on Oct. 21.

Oklahoma still has one game left in September, facing Iowa State on Saturday at 6 p.m. on FS1. Caesars Sportsbook — there is no Caesars Oklahoma — lists the Sooners as a 21-point favorite with a moneyline of -1400.
