We’re less than a month away from the opening kickoff of the 2023 college football season, with high hopes of a rebound in Norman and Stillwater this fall.
Fresh off Oklahoma’s lowest win total (six) since going 5-6 in 1998, the Brent Venables-coached squad will look to get back on track this season, beginning with the team’s home opener against Arkansas State on Sept. 2.
BetOklahoma.com utilized SportsOddsHistory.com to take a look at the preseason odds for Big 12 Champion dating back to 2008 when data was made available, and who ended up winning the conference.
There is no legal Oklahoma sports betting. Wagering bills were considered this legislative session, but didn’t get a lot of traction. Sports fans in the state would need to go to Kansas or Arkansas to bet on sports.
Big 12 Preseason Odds History
There is no BetMGM Oklahoma, but nationally the sportsbook gives OU the second-best Big 12 title odds (at +325, behind Texas’ +100) and a preseason win total over/under of 9.5.
Preseason Favorites Have Mixed Success
It’s been four years since the last preseason betting favorite won it all in the Big 12, with the Sooners’ 2019 squad being the last to do so.
In the interim, Texas in 2020 (+140) and the Sooners in 2021 (-165) and 2022 (+200) were preseason favorites that ultimately fizzled out.
Oklahoma was able to win the conference as the preseason betting favorite four years in a row, between 2016 and 2019, showing a wire-to-wire run is indeed possible in today’s Big 12.
What About The Cowboys?
Up in Stillwater, Mike Gundy’s Oklahoma State squad is facing even longer odds at capturing the school’s first Big 12 title since 2011.
Although there are no Oklahoma betting apps, national operators list OSU at +1200 to win the conference, ranking eighth overall, with a win total over/under of 6.5.
The Cowboys’ odds this fall aren’t nearly as long as they were 12 years ago, when Gundy and company stormed through their schedule, going 12-1 (and 8-1 in Big 12 play).
Oklahoma State slid back to the pack a bit in 2022 after a 12-win campaign in 2021, going 7-6 with the program’s first sub-.500 Big 12 record (4-5) since going 3-6 in 2018.
OSU hosts Central Arkansas on Sept. 2 in its season opener.
